The style is punchy and funny. It makes for a great reading.
There is plenty of action and plots, the story is intriguing and the underlying issues thought-provoking. I agree with some of the previous reviews: the characters are one of the strengths of the story. They are real, everyday people, and I love how each reacts differently to the extraordinary of the situation.
Gatekeepers is a wonderfully imaginative story which will take you on a journey through time and around the globe. (...) Like CS Lewis’s Narnia or Philip Pullman’s Dark Materials novels, a portal opens into a parallel universe. Here we have the idea we yearn for, the opportunity to go back in time and reimagine our world. The tantalising question arises: could we intervene in history to make our world a better place? But this is no syrupy adventure, it is made clear that there are no happy endings. There will always be those who exploit, who are greedy for money and power, those who plunder the natural world without care for the consequences. But we all have the power to fight for what we believe in, no one ever said it would be easy. As Leila writes in an email to Yoko: “Life is meant to be unpredictable for us. An exceptional first novel from a creative writer. Her expressionism is sublime. This book takes the reader on a journey that is mesmerising.
